「cancel culture」は、個人や組織が不適切とされる発言や行動により、社会的制裁や排除を受ける現代的な文化現象を表現する重要な概念です。IELTSのライティングやスピーキングで、ソーシャルメディア、言論の自由、社会正義、現代社会の価値観などのトピックについて議論する際に非常に有用な表現です。

この表現は「キャンセル（cancel）」と「文化（culture）」を組み合わせた比較的新しい概念で、2010年代後半から広く使用されるようになりました。元々は番組や契約の「取り消し」を意味していた「cancel」が、ソーシャルメディア時代に人物や組織の社会的地位を「無効化」する意味で使われるようになりました。支持者は説明責任の文化として評価し、批判者は行き過ぎた検閲や集団リンチとして問題視する、議論の分かれる現象です。

Candidate: Social media has dramatically transformed communication, but it's also created new challenges. One significant phenomenon is cancel culture, where people can face serious consequences for their posts or comments. On one hand, this has made people more aware of how their words might affect others, especially marginalized communities. It's also given ordinary people the power to hold public figures accountable for their actions. However, I think there's also a downside. People might become too afraid to express their genuine opinions, even in good faith discussions. The speed and scale of social media can sometimes lead to misunderstandings being blown out of proportion.
