traffic jam
traffic congestion
a traffic jam、traffic jams
There were two traffic jams on my way to work.
The roads were congested, but traffic was still moving.
Heavy congestion often leads to traffic jams.
Traffic congestion is a serious problem in many cities. と Traffic jams are a serious problem in many cities.
Many cities have a serious traffic congestion.congestion は通常数えないので、a を付けないのが一般的です
○
Many cities have serious traffic congestion.
○
Many cities have serious traffic jams.traffic jam
The traffic is really bad today. や There's a lot of traffic on the motorway.
In many cities around the world, traffic congestion is a serious problem. What are the causes of this problem? What measures could be taken to reduce traffic congestion?
One major cause of congestion is the growing number of private cars on city roads. As incomes rise, more households can afford a car, yet road space in most urban centres remains limited. During the morning rush hour, these vehicles converge on the same routes, and a single bottleneck, such as a narrow bridge, can create tailbacks that stretch for several kilometres. A minor accident at this time of day may bring an entire district to a standstill, leaving commuters stuck in long traffic jams.
Governments could ease congestion by charging drivers to enter city centres at peak times and investing the revenue in public transport. Such a policy would discourage unnecessary car journeys and give commuters a realistic alternative to driving.

Q. Do people often experience traffic jams in your country?
Yes, quite often, especially in big cities like Tokyo. On weekday mornings, the main roads are sometimes bumper to bumper, and if there's an accident, you can get stuck in traffic for over an hour. That's one reason why so many people there commute by train.
Q. Do you think traffic congestion is a serious problem in most cities?
I think it is, particularly in cities without a good rail network. People waste a lot of time on the road, and all those idling cars make the air worse. Having said that, some places have managed to ease the problem by charging drivers to enter the centre.
