Cambridge IELTS 20 Test 4

1-1 had determined to make her way as an artist → had already made her mind up about the career(Q9)

By the time she graduated from high school in 1905, she had determined to make her way as an artist.

When O'Keeffe finished high school, she had already made her mind up about the career that she wanted.

had determined(心を決めていた)が had already made her mind up に、graduated from(卒業した)が finished に置き換えられています。make her way as an artist(画家として身を立てる)は、設問では the career that she wanted(自分の望む職業)と、画家という語を出さずに書かれています。

1-2 critical ... approaches that ... engage and benefit communities → essential to adopt strategies which involve and help residents(Q23)

本文 Passage 2

'For long-term success, it's critical that we transition towards multifunctional approaches that embed natural processes and that engage and benefit communities and local decision-makers.'

設問文 Q23(人物と発言を結びつける問題)

It is essential to adopt strategies which involve and help residents of the region.

critical(きわめて重要な)が essential に、approaches(取り組み方)が strategies(戦略)に、engage and benefit(巻き込み、利益をもたらす)が involve and help に、communities が residents of the region(その地域の住民)に変わっています。

transition towards(〜へ移行する)は、設問では adopt(採り入れる)になっています。 本文にある multifunctional(多機能の)や embed natural processes(自然の働きを組み込む)、local decision-makers(地元の意思決定者)は、設問には入っていません。

1-3 If they are managed and used properly ... the most efficient control method → the most effective method ... if they are correctly managed(Q35)

本文 Passage 3

'If they are managed and used properly, livestock guard dogs are the most efficient control method that we have in terms of the amount of livestock that they save from predation,' says van Bommel.

設問文 Q35(人物と発言を結びつける問題)

Livestock guard dogs are the most effective method of protecting farm animals if they are correctly managed.

properly(適切に)が correctly に、efficient(効率のよい)が effective(効果的な)と言い換えられています。

本文の in terms of the amount of livestock that they save from predation(捕食から救う家畜の数という点で)は、設問の protecting farm animals の中に吸収されています。

2-1 Stieglitz's ... portraits of O'Keeffe, taken over the course of twenty years → O'Keeffe was the subject ... for many years(Q11)

The ups and downs of their personal and professional relationship were recorded in Stieglitz's celebrated black-and-white portraits of O'Keeffe, taken over the course of twenty years ...

O'Keeffe was the subject of Stieglitz's photographic work for many years.

over the course of twenty years(20年にわたって)は for many years(長年)と、範囲の広い言い方になっています。 The ups and downs of their ... relationship(2人の関係の浮き沈み)で、写真が主語ではありません。

2-2 this technology is becoming necessary in places that didn't previously need it → The number of locations requiring action ... has grown(Q26)

本文 Passage 2

'When I started this,' explains founder Elizabeth English, 'climate change was not on the tip of everybody's tongue,' but this technology is becoming necessary in places that didn't previously need it.

設問文 Q26(人物と発言を結びつける問題)

The number of locations requiring action to adapt to flooding has grown in recent years.

The number of locations ... has grown(場所の数が増えた)と、数を主語にした文で書かれています。

not on the tip of everybody's tongue(誰もが口にする話題ではなかった)は、気候変動がいまほど話題になっていなかった、という意味の慣用句です。

2-3 rate the performance of the dogs as very good or excellent → were very satisfied with the performance(Q34)

本文 Passage 3

... more than 90 per cent of the farmers participating in a programme to train and use guard dogs to protect their herds against attack from wolves rate the performance of the dogs as very good or excellent.

設問文 Q34(人物と発言を結びつける問題)

Most farmers in Portugal who participated in a guard dog programme were very satisfied with the performance of the dogs.

more than 90 per cent は Most(大部分の)に、participating in(参加している)という分詞は who participated in という関係詞節と言い換えられています。a programme to train and use guard dogs to protect their herds against attack from wolves という長い説明は、設問では a guard dog programme の3語です。

3-1 ecosystems of trees and shrubs that help defend coastal areas → how a type of plant functions as a natural protection(Q14)

本文 Passage 2

... the island's coastal mangroves: ecosystems of trees and shrubs that help defend coastal areas by trapping sediment in their net-like root systems ...

設問文 Q14(情報がどの段落にあるかを答える問題)

how a type of plant functions as a natural protection for a coastal area

mangroves(マングローブ)や trees and shrubs(高木と低木)を、設問は a type of plant(ある種類の植物)とまとめています。

3-2 a Geographic Information System data mapping tool → a technology used to locate areas most in need(Q17)

本文 Passage 2

Using a Geographic Information System data mapping tool, the programme identified streets with low tree canopy cover in three of the city's neighbourhoods ...

設問文 Q17(情報がどの段落にあるかを答える問題)

a mention of a technology used to locate areas most in need of intervention

identified(特定した)は locate(位置を突き止める)に置き換えられています。

3-3 If ranchers don't have a dead cow, they will not make a call to apply for a permit to kill a wolf → a change in the behaviour of farmers towards predators(Q32)

本文 Passage 3

'If ranchers don't have a dead cow, they will not make a call to apply for a permit to kill a wolf.'

設問文 Q32(人物と発言を結びつける問題)

The reduction in livestock losses caused by guard dogs may lead to a change in the behaviour of farmers towards predators.

The reduction in livestock losses(家畜の被害が減ること)に、許可を申請しないことを a change in the behaviour of farmers towards predators(捕食動物に対する農家のふるまいの変化)にまとめています。

ranchers(牧場主)は farmers に、a wolf は predators(捕食動物)に変わっています。

4-1 literally a matter of life and death → absolutely vital for our survival(Q24)

本文 Passage 2

'Urban cooling is literally a matter of life and death for our future in LA,' says Spotts.

設問文 Q24(人物と発言を結びつける問題)

Interventions which reduce heat are absolutely vital for our survival in this location.

a matter of life and death(生きるか死ぬかの問題)は、「きわめて重大なこと」を表す慣用句です。設問はこれを vital for our survival(生き延びるのに欠かせない)と言い換えています。literally(文字どおり)と absolutely(まったく)は同じ意味の語ではありませんが、どちらも評価を強める働きをしています。

Urban cooling(都市を冷やすこと)は Interventions which reduce heat(暑さを和らげる対策)に、in LA は in this location と言い換えられています。

4-2 there may be a bright future for guard dogs → An optimistic suggestion about the possible positive developments(Q28)

本文 Passage 3

So if we can get this right, there may be a bright future for guard dogs in promoting harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.

設問文 Q28(情報がどの段落にあるかを答える問題)

An optimistic suggestion about the possible positive developments in the use of livestock guard dogs

a bright future(明るい未来)という比喩を、設問は optimistic(楽観的な)と positive developments(よい方向への進展)の2つの語で表しています。there may be(〜があるかもしれない)は suggestion(提案、示唆)と possible(ありうる)に置き換えられています。

if we can get this right(これをうまくやれれば)の this は、前の文までに書かれている、番犬を使って弱い野生動物を守る取り組みを指しています。

4-3 too much human affection makes it a great dog for guarding the front porch → need to associate more with farm animals than with humans(Q36)

本文 Passage 3

'A fluffy white puppy is fun to be around, but too much human affection makes it a great dog for guarding the front porch, rather than a great livestock guard dog.'

設問文 Q36(人物と発言を結びつける問題)

Guard dogs need to associate more with farm animals than with humans in order to be effective.

設問はこれを need to associate more with farm animals than with humans(人よりも家畜と多く関わる必要がある)と、比喩を使わずに書いています。

too much human affection(人からの愛情が多すぎること)は、設問の than with humans の部分に対応しています。rather than a great livestock guard dog(すぐれた家畜の番犬ではなく)という否定の比較が、設問では in order to be effective(役に立つためには)という目的の語句になっています。 Their initial training is to make them understand that livestock is going to be their life(家畜が自分の一生になると分からせるのが最初の訓練だ)も、設問の more with farm animals と同じ内容です。

Remarkably, she remained independent from shifting art trends and her work stayed true to her own vision ...

Georgia O'Keeffe's style was greatly influenced by the changing fashions in art over the seven decades of her career.

✗

引用した文の1つ前、段落の書き出しにある For seven decades(70年にわたって)も、設問の over the seven decades of her career と一致しています。

and her work stayed true to her own vision(作品は自分の見方に忠実だった)も同じ方向の内容です。

She sent some of these drawings to a friend in New York, who showed them to art collector and photographer Alfred Stieglitz in January 1916.

Stieglitz was impressed, and exhibited the drawings later that year at his gallery on Fifth Avenue, New York City ...

Alfred Stieglitz first discovered O'Keeffe's work when she sent some abstract drawings to his gallery in New York City.

✗

sent some of these drawings ... his gallery ...

○

sent ... to a friend in New York, who showed them to ...

sent some of these drawings は設問の sent some abstract drawings に、his gallery と New York City も設問にそのまま出てきます。

5-3 increased the size of her canvases

From the 1950s into the 1970s, O'Keeffe travelled widely, making trips to Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

In both series, O'Keeffe increased the size of her canvases, sometimes to mural proportions ...

O'Keeffe produced a greater quantity of work during the 1950s to 1970s than at any other time in her life.

✗

increased the size of her canvases=作品の量が増えた同じ時期に increased があるので、この時期にたくさん描いたと読む

○

設問の during the 1950s to 1970s は、本文の From the 1950s into the 1970s とほぼ同じ形です。

increased の目的語は the size of her canvases(キャンバスの大きさ)で、sometimes to mural proportions(ときには壁画ほどの大きさに)と続いています。 設問の a greater quantity of work ... than at any other time(ほかのどの時期よりも多くの作品)は、ほかの時期と作品の数を比べる内容です。

Test 4 の Q23 では、長い発言のうち engage and benefit communities の部分が、設問では involve and help residents of the region になっていて、multifunctional や embed natural processes は設問に入っていませんでした。

O'Keeffe was the subject

a matter of life and death

Test 4 の Q24 では、a matter of life and death が vital for our survival になっていました。

Test 4 の Q8 では、shifting art trends と the changing fashions in art がきれいに対応していましたが、その前に remained independent from が付いていて、流行に影響されなかったという内容でした。
