1-1 reduce stoppages → cut down on delays(Q19)
... mostly in the middle of the road to reduce stoppages.
the buses use designated ___ to cut down on delays
reduce(減らす)が cut down on という句動詞に、stoppages(停止、止まること)が delays(遅れ)に置き換えられています。
設問の designated(指定された)は、本文の separated from other traffic(ほかの車と分けられた)を言い換えた語です。
1-2 incremental steps → a gradual way(Q28)
Evolution usually works by incremental steps and so does technology.
設問文 Q28(選択問題)
In the sixth paragraph, the writer mentions mobile phones to make the point that
選択肢の1つ:most developments happen in a gradual way.
選択肢の gradual(段階的な)は本文の incremental(少しずつ増えていく)の、happen in 〜 way(〜なかたちで起こる)は works by 〜 steps(〜な段階を踏んで進む)の言い換えです。
ところが、本文の携帯電話の文(the first mobile phones weren't great at, well, anything really)そのものには、答えに関わる語が入っていません。
1-3 a shortage of buses → insufficient number of vehicles(Q23)
A shortage of buses ... means the system is carrying 200,000 people a day, half the expected capacity.
insufficient number of vehicles are available due to the effects of a severe ___
shortage(不足)が insufficient number(足りない数)に、buses が vehicles(車両)と言い換えられています。
設問ではこれが due to the effects of 〜(〜の影響で)になっています。
2-1 have dried up and vanished → the disappearance of(Q7)
... that the species normally depended on have dried up and vanished.
climate change, causing the disappearance of ___ which the saiga relied on
本文の動詞 vanished(消えた)が、設問では名詞 the disappearance(消失)になっています。
設問の climate change, causing 〜 は、段落の冒頭 Climate change poses a further threat.
2-2 drivers often refuse to turn on the air conditioning → the temperature control is sometimes not activated(Q22)
... drivers often refuse to turn on the air conditioning ...
the temperature control is sometimes not activated in order to reduce ___ use
本文の to save 〜(〜を節約するために)は、設問では in order to reduce 〜 use(〜の使用を減らすために)になっています。
2-3 tried to relieve the pressure on threatened African rhinos → Efforts to protect rhinos in Africa(Q10)
Poaching reached epidemic levels after misguided conservationists tried to relieve the pressure on threatened African rhinos ...
Efforts to protect rhinos in Africa had a significant effect on saiga populations.
Male saiga were almost wiped out(オスのサイガはほぼ全滅した)で、その影響を述べています。
3-1 the many species they support → a number of different animals(Q12)
Its purpose is to protect and restore Kazakhstan's steppe, semi-desert and desert ecosystems and the many species they support, including the critically endangered saiga.
The Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative was formed for the benefit of a number of different animals.
the many species they support(その生態系が支えている多くの種)が、設問では a number of different animals(さまざまな動物)になっています。
Its purpose is to protect 〜(その目的は〜を守ることだ)は、設問では was formed for the benefit of 〜(〜のためにつくられた)になっています。目的を表す purpose が、for the benefit of という前置詞句に変わっています。
3-2 the frozen heights of high-altitude regions → harsh environments(Q32)
... extinct hominins such as the Denisovans lived on the frozen heights of high-altitude regions 200,000 years ago ...
設問文 Q32(文の続きを選ぶ問題)
Evidence from high-altitude regions suggests that
選択肢の1つ:other species managed to survive in harsh environments before the arrival of Homo sapiens.
選択肢の harsh environments(厳しい環境)は、本文の the frozen heights(凍りつく高地)を含む、範囲の広い言い方です。lived on 〜(〜に住んでいた)は managed to survive in 〜(〜でなんとか生き延びた)になり、extinct hominins such as the Denisovans(デニソワ人などの絶滅したヒト族)は other species(ほかの種)になっています。
before the arrival of Homo sapiens
3-3 a meta-analysis / hunted → an academic publication / looked for food(Q33)
... a meta-analysis published in June 2023 compiled data on several dozen foraging societies and found women hunted in 80 per cent of them.
設問文 Q33(文の続きを選ぶ問題)
An academic publication from June 2023 shows that
選択肢の1つ:experts may have been mistaken about who looked for food in early human communities.
a meta-analysis(複数の研究を統合した分析)が an academic publication(学術的な発表)に、hunted(狩りをした)が looked for food(食べ物を探した)に置き換えられています。
4-1 informally without any agreed strategy → unplanned(Q17)
Nearly all the expansion is happening on the periphery, and nearly all takes place informally without any agreed strategy.
The majority of the present residential development in Dar es Salaam is unplanned.
informally(正式な手続きを経ずに)と without any agreed strategy(合意された戦略もなく)を、設問は unplanned(計画されていない)の1語にまとめています。
Nearly all(ほとんどすべて)は The majority(大部分)に、the expansion(拡大)は the present residential development(現在の住宅開発)に変わっています。
4-2 unpick this stuff → reevaluating research influenced by outdated beliefs(Q29)
... now unfashionably patriarchal views about gender, and those notions fed into their research.
Today's researchers are trying to unpick this stuff ...
設問文 Q29(選択問題)
In the seventh paragraph, the phrase 'unpick this stuff' refers to the task of
選択肢の1つ:reevaluating research influenced by outdated beliefs about society.
now unfashionably patriarchal views(いまでは時代遅れになった家父長的な見方)は outdated beliefs(古い考え)に、fed into their research(研究に入り込んだ)は research influenced by 〜(〜に影響された研究)になっています。
4-3 turned out to be female, not male as many had assumed → previous assumptions ... were inaccurate(Q34)
... an Iberian leader from around 4000 years ago turned out to be female, not male as many had assumed ...
設問文 Q34(文の続きを選ぶ問題)
Analysis of a 4000-year-old Iberian leader indicates that
選択肢の1つ:previous assumptions about who had power in the prehistoric world were inaccurate.
本文の as many had assumed(多くの人が思い込んでいたように)は、動詞 assume を使っています。選択肢はこれを名詞 assumptions にし、turned out to be female, not male(男性ではなく女性だとわかった)を were inaccurate(正しくなかった)とひと言で評価しています。
leader(指導者)は who had power(権力を持っていたのは誰か)に言い換えられています。
Legal protection ensured its survival for a while, and numbers steadily recovered throughout most of the 20th century.
For most of the 20th century, the population of saiga were falling.
✗
almost driven to extinction、over 95% ... was lost段落の前後が絶滅寸前や激減の話なので、20世紀も減り続けていたと読む
○
most of the 20th century
For most of the 20th century は、本文の throughout most of the 20th century とほぼ同じ形です。この語句と結びついている動詞は recovered(回復した)で、steadily(着実に)が添えられています。
... four out of five of its people live in single-storey informal settlements on the spreading edges of the city ...
Most of the residents of Dar es Salaam live in high-rise blocks on the edge of the city.
✗
four out of five=most、edges=edge、settlements=blocks割合も場所も言い換えがそろっているので、同じ内容だと読む
four out of five(5人に4人)は Most(大部分)の、on the spreading edges of the city(広がり続ける市の周辺部)は on the edge of the city の言い換えです。settlements(居住地)と blocks(集合住宅)も、住む場所という点では対応しています。
non-traditional(伝統的でない)と unconventional(型にはまらない)は、言い換えとして自然に対応します。
the way the results were released(結果の発表のしかた)について述べている文で、調査の methods(方法)については書かれていません。
Test 3 では、本文の vanished が設問では the disappearance に、drivers often refuse to turn on the air conditioning が the temperature control is sometimes not activated になっていました。
A shortage of buses after 〜 が、設問では due to the effects of 〜 になっていました。
Evolution usually works by incremental steps and so does technology という文が、選択肢の gradual way と対応していました。
