I spent most of my childhood in a small town by the sea. For many students, the transition from childhood to adulthood happens at university. Parenthood completely changed the way I spend my weekends.
They live in a friendly neighbourhood.
I live in a friendly neighbourhood.
My neighbourhood is very friendly.
My neighbourhoods are all friendly.
He shouted so loudly that the whole neighbourhood could hear him.
また、neighbour は数えられる名詞なので、1人のときは a neighbour や my neighbour のように a や my が必要です。
local は a local shop のように名詞の前につけて使うのが基本で、nearby は a nearby park とも a park nearby とも言えます。
Part 1 では、Now let's talk about your neighbours.
Q. Do you know your neighbours well?
Not really, to be honest. I live in a block of flats, and most people leave early for work, so we usually just say hello in the lift. I do know my next-door neighbour a little, though. She's lived there for years, and she sometimes gives me vegetables from her garden.
Q. How often do you talk to the people who live near you?
Maybe once or twice a week. It's mostly small talk when I bump into someone outside, like chatting about the weather or a new café that's opened nearby. My neighbourhood is fairly quiet, so there aren't many chances to have a proper conversation.
Q. Would you help a neighbour if they needed it?
Of course. If one of my neighbours asked me to keep an eye on their flat while they were away, I'd be happy to do it. That kind of help is what makes a neighbourhood feel safe, and I'd hope they'd do the same for me.
Do you know your neighbours well?
質問では neighbours が使われず、the people who live near you と聞かれることもあります。
Q. In what ways does heavy traffic change the character of a neighbourhood?
Quite a lot, actually. When a busy road runs through a residential area, it gets noisier and less safe, so parents stop letting their children play outside. People also walk less, which means they don't bump into their neighbours as often. Over time, a neighbourhood that used to feel like a community can turn into a place people just drive through. That's why some cities in Europe have closed side streets to through traffic, and residents there often say their streets feel calmer and friendlier.
My neighbourhoods are all friendly.
Do public buildings affect how people feel about a neighbourhood?
What happens to a neighbourhood when its public buildings close?
Would neighbourhoods be stronger if rich and poor households lived side by side?
