shop: (especially British English) a building or part of a building where you can buy goods or services store: 1 a large shop that sells many different types of goods 2 (North American English) a shop, large or small
Cambridge Dictionary も、shop を a place where you can buy goods or services と説明したうえで、UK(US usually store)と添えています。
go to the shops
go to the store
a corner shop
a corner store
a shoe shop
a shoe store
a shopping centre
a mall
△
There are a lot of shops near my station, so I often have dinner there.
○
There are a lot of shops and restaurants near my station, so I often have dinner there.
Oxford Learner's Dictionaries(2026
corner shop: (British English) a small shop that sells food, newspapers, etc., especially one near people's houses I got some milk from the corner shop.
Cambridge Dictionary(2026
corner shop: a small shop, especially on a corner of a road, that sells foods and other things that are often needed
Cambridge は especially on a corner of a road(特に通りの角にある)、Oxford は especially one near people's houses(特に家の近くにある)と説明していて、どちらも especially が付いています。
Oxford Learner's Dictionaries は convenience store を a small local shop that sells food, newspapers, etc. and has long opening hours と説明していて、営業時間が長いことも定義に含まれています。
✗
There is a conveni near my house.「
○
There's a convenience store near my house, and it's open 24 hours.24
When I was a child, there was a small family-run corner shop near my school, and I used to buy sweets there on my way home.
supermarket: a large shop that sells food, drinks and goods used in the home. People choose what they want from the shelves and pay for it as they leave.
Cambridge Dictionary(2026
supermarket: a large shop which sells most types of food and other goods needed in the home
✗
I usually go to the super near my house after work.super
○
I usually go to the supermarket near my house after work.market
✗
I bought this bag at a depart in Osaka.depart
○
I bought this bag at a department store in Osaka.store
a supermarket
a department store
a convenience store
a chemist / a drugstore / a pharmacy
a hardware store
a 100-yen shop
where everything costs 100 yen
department store は、Cambridge Dictionary で a large shop divided into several different parts, each of which sells different things と説明されています。
I often go to a 100-yen shop, where almost everything costs 100 yen. It's great for things like stationery and kitchen goods.
Oxford Learner's Dictionaries(2026
mall (also shopping mall) (both especially North American English): a large building or covered area that has many shops, restaurants, etc. inside it shopping centre (British English): a group of shops built together, sometimes under one roof
Cambridge Dictionary(2026
mall: a large, usually covered, shopping area where cars are not allowed
There's a huge shopping centre about twenty minutes from my house by car. It has a supermarket, a cinema and more than a hundred shops under one roof.
strip: (North American English) a street that has many shops, stores, restaurants, etc. along it strip mall: (North American English) a line of shops and restaurants next to a main road
Cambridge Dictionary は a shopping area consisting of a row of shops, restaurants, other businesses and a place for cars to park, especially along a busy road と説明していて、店の列に駐車場が付いていることも定義に入っています。
high street は、Oxford Learner's Dictionaries で the main street of a town, where most shops, banks, etc. are と説明されています。
アーケードの付いた商店街なら、a covered shopping street や a shopping arcade と言えます。Cambridge Dictionary は arcade を a covered area or passage in which there are shops と説明していて、屋根があることが定義の一部です。
There's a shopping street that runs from the station to my flat. It's lined with small shops, like a greengrocer's, a bakery and a couple of cafés.
My hometown has a covered shopping street, so you can walk around without an umbrella even on rainy days.
A lot of the shops have closed down.
ぴったりの語が出てこないときも、a small shop near my house that sells food and newspapers のように3点を並べれば、corner shop と同じ内容を伝えられます。

I live in a quiet residential area, so there aren't any big shops nearby. There's a convenience store on the corner, which is open 24 hours, and a small supermarket about five minutes' walk away. For anything else, I go to the shopping street near the station. It's lined with small family-run shops, and I quite like the atmosphere there.
Q. Do you prefer shopping online or in physical stores?
I prefer physical stores, especially for clothes. I like to try things on before I buy them, and sizes can be quite different from brand to brand. There's a big shopping centre about ten minutes from my flat, so it isn't much trouble to go there. For books or electronics, though, I usually just order online.
Q. Do people often use online shopping instead of visiting stores?
I think so, especially for things like books, electronics and everyday items. It's simply easier to compare prices on your phone than to walk around a shopping centre. As a result, a lot of small shops on the local shopping street have closed down in my hometown, and one of the department stores has gone as well. Mind you, people still go to supermarkets for fresh food, because they want to see what they're buying. My guess is that physical shops will survive, but mainly the ones selling things people want to check with their own eyes.
