the four-year project は the research に、find out(明らかにする)は discover になっています。
1-2 a quick online order → a straightforward internet purchase(Q29)
... obtaining such a globe was not simply a matter of a quick online order ...
設問文 Q29(語群から選ぶ要約問題)
He soon learnt that a straightforward ___ would not be possible.
online(オンラインの)が internet に、order(注文)が purchase(購入)に変わっています。
not simply a matter of 〜(単に〜で済む話ではない)は、設問では would not be possible(できないだろう)になっています。
1-3 shoddy commercial versions designed for school classrooms → inferior makes intended for educational use(Q30・Q31)
Bellerby came across shoddy commercial versions designed for school classrooms ...
設問文 Q30・Q31(語群から選ぶ要約問題)
Some ___ that had been intended for ___ were available ...
2-1 don't have to devote ... to gathering firewood → no need to spend ... collecting fuel(Q11)
... they don't have to devote ... every day to gathering firewood ...
no need for them to spend so much ___ collecting fuel
devote 〜 to doing(〜を…
firewood(薪)が fuel(燃料)になっている点も見ておきたいところです。
2-2 whether ... could be caused by → if there is a connection between(Q22)
Tsimpli and her colleagues are investigating whether these low learning outcomes could be caused by an Indian school system where the language that children are taught in often differs from the language used at home.
設問文 Q22(Yes・No・Not Given)
Tsimpli and her team wanted to know if there is a connection between poor academic performance and being taught in an unfamiliar language.
本文の could be caused by(〜が原因かもしれない)という受け身の動詞が、設問では a connection between A and B(AとBの関係)という名詞の構文になっています。are investigating whether(〜かどうかを調べている)は wanted to know if(〜かどうかを知りたかった)に変わっています。
low learning outcomes(低い学習成果)は poor academic performance(学業の不振)に、the language that children are taught in often differs from the language used at home(授業の言語が家庭の言語と違うことが多い)は being taught in an unfamiliar language(なじみのない言語で教えられること)になっています。
2-3 the medium of instruction ... may hold back → may be disadvantaged by being instructed in English(Q24)
... the medium of instruction used in schools, especially English, may hold back those children who have little familiarity with, or exposure to, the language before starting school and outside of school life.
設問文 Q24(選択問題)
What point does the writer make about primary schools in India in the sixth paragraph?
Poor children may be disadvantaged further by being instructed in English.
本文では the medium of instruction(授業の言語)が主語で、hold back(成長を妨げる)が動詞です。選択肢では children が主語になり、hold back は may be disadvantaged(不利になるかもしれない)という受け身に、the medium of instruction ...
Exposure to English outside of school is of limited benefit.
... since as early as the 1980s when, across the world, they began to explore its potential as a biofuel.
Scientists started investigating the possibility of using water hyacinth to generate biogas in the last century.
the 1980s(1980年代)を、設問は the last century(前の世紀)とまとめています。
began to explore its potential(その可能性を探り始めた)は started investigating the possibility に、as a biofuel(生物燃料として)は to generate biogas(バイオガスを作るために)になっています。
3-2 crowded and bustling streets / more than 20 million people → a dense population(Q14)
The crowded and bustling streets of Delhi teem with life.
... as more than 20 million people go about their daily lives.
設問文 Q14(語群から選ぶ要約問題)
The city of Delhi has a ___ and as you walk through its streets you hear people speaking a variety of languages.
本文では crowded(混み合った)、bustling(にぎわう)、teem with life(活気にあふれる)、more than 20 million people(2,000万人を超える人々)と、デリーの人の多さが何通りにも書かれています。語群の dense population(人口が密集していること)は、これらをまとめて表す語句です。
設問の後半 you hear people speaking a variety of languages は、本文の you'll hear a multitude of languages の言い換えです。a multitude of(多数の)が a variety of(さまざまな)になっています。
3-3 the knowledge of artisan cartographers → the necessary skills(Q32)
Even his trips to Morocco and India, where surely the knowledge of artisan cartographers had been preserved, drew a blank.
設問文 Q32(語群から選ぶ要約問題)
He even travelled to places where people might still have the ___, but Bellerby could not find what he wanted.
had been preserved(受け継がれてきた)は might still have(まだ持っているかもしれない)に置き換えられています。 drew a blank(空振りに終わった)は could not find what he wanted(望むものは見つからなかった)という意味です。
What is Tsimpli suggesting when she uses the phrase 'that ship has sailed'?
It is too late to remove English completely as a language of instruction in schools.
that ship has sailed 選択肢はこれを It is too late と言い換えています。 We are not suggesting that English be withdrawn(英語をなくすべきだと言っているのではない)の withdrawn(取り除かれる)が、選択肢の remove になっています。
English can still be used(英語は引き続き使える)とも言っています。
4-3 hardly a blueprint for commercial success → does not tell you how to create a profitable business(Q40)
His book ... is hardly a blueprint for commercial success.
設問文 Q40(選択問題)
What does the reviewer say about Bellerby's book in the final paragraph?
It does not tell you how to create a profitable business.
a blueprint for commercial success(商業的に成功するための設計図)を、選択肢は how to create a profitable business(利益の出る事業の作り方)と言い換えています。
... it had 'escaped' out of the country via the Kagera river and made its way downstream to Lake Victoria.
... blocking fishing routes ...
Fishermen took some water hyacinth plants to Lake Victoria.
✗
fishing routes=fishermen、made its way to=took to同じ段落に fishing があり、湖に着いた経緯も書かれているので、漁師が運んだと読む
○
made its way downstream=(水草が)川を下って広がっていった主語は it(水草)。
made its way to 〜(〜へたどり着いた)を took 〜 to(〜を…
本文の made its way downstream の主語は it で、前の文の the plant、つまり水草を指しています。'
5-2 in an attempt to を「失敗した」と読む(Q6)
... huge piles of water hyacinth that villagers had taken out of the water in an attempt to clear it were a common sight.
People found it impossible to remove much water hyacinth from Lake Victoria.
✗
○
huge piles ... that villagers had taken out of the water湖から取り出された水草が大きな山になっていた
ところが、この文の主語は huge piles of water hyacinth(水草の巨大な山)で、villagers had taken out of the water(村人が水から取り出した)がそれを説明しています。in an attempt to clear it
... contrary to stubbornly held popular views of our ancestors' geographical ignorance, we have known that the world is spherical since at least the 6th century BCE.
設問文 Q33(Yes・No・Not Given)
The assumption today that people in the past knew very little about geography is correct.
✗
popular views of our ancestors' geographical ignorance=people in the past knew very little about geography見方の中身が一致しているので、筆者も同じ見方だと読む
○
popular views(世間一般の見方)が The assumption today(今日の思い込み)に、our ancestors'(祖先の)が people in the past に、geographical ignorance(地理についての無知)が knew very little about geography(地理についてほとんど知らなかった)に変わっています。
Test 4 の Q7 では、本文の the 1980s が設問では the last century になっていました。
in an attempt to
in an attempt to
