Onsen is a Japanese hot spring.

An onsen is a bath filled with natural hot spring water. People go there to soak and relax, often at a traditional inn.
Interestingly, the water doesn't have to be hot. Under Japanese law, it counts as onsen water if it contains certain minerals, even if it's cold when it comes out of the ground.
An onsen is something you usually go to on a trip, but a sento is a neighbourhood bathhouse. In the past, a lot of homes didn't have their own bath, so people went there every day.
a traditional Japanese inn
We stayed at a ryokan, a traditional inn with tatami floors. After the bath, everyone walked around in yukata, and dinner was served in our room.
At most onsen, men and women use separate baths, and everyone bathes naked. It sounds strange to a lot of visitors, but once you get used to it, nobody really cares.
Some onsen don't allow people with tattoos, because tattoos used to be linked with gangsters in Japan. But more places are becoming tattoo-friendly now, partly because more tourists are coming from overseas.
Q. Where do you usually go when you want some peace and quiet?
There's a small onsen about thirty minutes from my house. I go there on weekday evenings when it's not crowded, and just sit in the outdoor bath for a while. Nobody talks much, so it's the quietest place I know.
Cue Card: Describe a place, other than your home, where you sometimes go to relax.
The place I'd like to talk about is a hot spring town in the mountains, about two hours from where I live. An onsen, in case you haven't been to one, is a bath filled with natural water that comes up from underground.
The town is quite small. There's one main street with old wooden inns and souvenir shops, and you can see steam coming up from the ground here and there. My favourite part is the outdoor bath at the inn where we usually stay, because you can see the river right below you.
I go there with my family two or three times a year. We check in, put on yukata, and go straight to the bath. You wash yourself first, then just soak in the hot water and do nothing. After that, we have a big dinner in our room, and I usually fall asleep really early.
I think it helps me relax because there's nothing to do there except bathe, eat and sleep. At home, I'm always checking my phone, but in the bath you obviously can't, so for a couple of days my head feels completely clear.
in case you haven't been to one
Q. Do you think people need more quiet time in their lives today?
Yes, I do. Most of us are connected to our phones all day, so we rarely have time when nothing is asking for our attention. That's probably one reason why places like onsen are still so popular in Japan, even among young people. You simply can't bring your phone into the bath, so you're forced to switch off for a while. I think people need that kind of break more than they used to.
We took a hot spring after dinner.take a bath
○
We had a soak in the hot spring after dinner.soak
「温泉に行く」なら go to an onsen、「お湯に浸かる」なら soak in the hot water や have a soak、「お湯に入る」なら get into the bath が使えます。take a bath in the hot spring と bath を残せば意味は通じますが、温泉でゆっくり浸かる場面なら have a soak のほうが自然に聞こえます。
△
You have to wash yourself before you enter the bath.
○
You have to wash yourself before you get into the bath.get into
湯船に入ることを言うなら get into the bath、出るなら get out of the bath のほうが、動作が具体的に伝わります。
An onsen is something you usually go to on a trip, but a sento is a neighbourhood bathhouse.
go to an onsen、have a soak in the hot spring、get into the bath take a bath in the hot spring のように bath を残せば意味は通じますが、浸かる場面なら have a soak のほうが自然です。
The onsen was really relaxing.
