Shichi-Go-San is a festival for children aged three, five and seven. Families take them to a shrine to give thanks that they've been healthy so far, and to pray for their future.
Officially, it's on November 15th, but these days many families just pick a weekend in October or November that suits them.
英語で話すなら、どちらか1つを It is said that ...
It is said that a shogun held a ceremony for his son on that day in the 1680s, and other families started to follow.
Q. What events do people in your country celebrate?
Quite a lot, actually. One I find interesting is Shichi-Go-San, a festival for young children in autumn. Kids dress up in kimonos and visit a shrine with their parents, and they get long sticks of candy.

Cue Card: Describe a good photograph of you that someone else took.
I'd like to talk about a photo of me when I was seven. It was taken at a photo studio for Shichi-Go-San, which is a festival in Japan for children aged three, five and seven.
In the photo, I'm wearing a red kimono with a gold obi, and I'm holding a long paper bag of chitose-ame, which are thin sticks of red and white candy. The name means "thousand-year candy," and it's meant to wish children a long life.
The photographer spent quite a long time trying to get me to smile, because I was tired of the heavy kimono by then. In the end, my mother made a funny face behind him, and that's the moment he captured.
I think it's a good photo because it shows how I really felt that day. My smile looks a bit forced, but my eyes are laughing. My parents still keep it on the shelf in the living room, and whenever I see it, I remember my mother behind the camera.
Q. Are celebrations held differently today from the way they were held in the past?
Yes, I think they've become more flexible and more commercial. Take Shichi-Go-San, for example. It used to be held on a fixed day, and families often passed kimonos down from one generation to the next. Now many people rent costumes from a photo studio and have the photos taken weeks before the shrine visit. Some people say it's lost its meaning, but I think it's just adapted to how busy parents are these days.
Take ..., for example. Some people say ... but I think ...
I took a photo at a photo studio.
○
I had my photo taken at a photo studio.
英語の take a photo は撮影する側の動作なので、写真館で撮ってもらったなら have my photo taken を使います。We got our family photo taken.
✗
We prayed my son's healthy growth.
○
We prayed for our son to grow up healthy.pray for
pray for my son's healthy growth
✗
When I was three years, I wore a kimono.
○
When I was three, I wore a kimono.three years old でも、three だけでもよい
「3歳と5歳と7歳の子ども」なら children aged three, five and seven や three-, five- and seven-year-olds が使えます。
七五三を a day for children や Japanese Children's Day と説明すると、こちらと混ざって聞こえます。
英語に対応する語はないので、Shichi-Go-San と名前を出してから、a festival for children aged three, five and seven と説明します。
Officially, it's on November 15th, but many families pick a weekend in October or November.
long, thin sticks of red and white candy のように見た目で説明し、名前が thousand-year candy という意味であることを添えます。
I had my photo taken. I took a photo. We got our family photo taken.
