Cambridge IELTS 20 Test 2
1-1 laws ... now limit boat speeds → some legislation in place(Q13)
... laws in certain parts of Florida now limit boat speeds during winter, allowing slow-moving manatees more time to respond.
There is some legislation in place which aims to reduce the likelihood of boat strikes on manatees in Florida.
laws(法律)が legislation(法令)に置き換えられています。本文の now limit(いまは制限している)が示す現在の状態に対応するのは、設問の in place(施行されている)です。
The chief cause of death in Florida manatees is boat strikes
1-2 countless arguments → numerous disputes(Q36)
... countless arguments between a team's manager and the umpire have taken place over its boundaries ...
設問文 Q36(語群から選ぶ要約問題)
In the past, ___ over strike calls were not uncommon ...
over its boundaries(その範囲をめぐって)は over strike calls(ストライクの判定をめぐって)に言い換えられています。
1-3 not be overly critical of ourselves / fend off distractions → not judging ourselves harshly / avoiding things that stop us concentrating(Q25・Q26)
本文 Passage 2
... evidence-based strategies that can help us fend off distractions ...
We should admit that we feel bad, but not be overly critical of ourselves.
設問文 Q25・Q26(選択肢を2つ選ぶ問題)
Which TWO recommendations for getting out of a cycle of procrastination does the writer give?
選択肢の2つ:not judging ourselves harshly/avoiding things that stop us concentrating on our tasks
overly critical of ourselves(自分に厳しすぎる)が judging ourselves harshly(自分を厳しく裁く)に、fend off distractions(気を散らすものを寄せつけない)が avoiding things that stop us concentrating(集中を妨げるものを避ける)と言い換えられています。
strategies that can help us
2-1 expected to undergo a decline of 20% over the next 40 years → predicted ... will fall in the coming decades(Q11)
Both are also expected to undergo a decline of 20% over the next 40 years.
It is predicted that West Indian manatee populations will fall in the coming decades.
are expected to(〜と見込まれている)は It is predicted that(〜と予測されている)と、It で始まる形に変わっています。
over the next 40 years(今後40年で)は in the coming decades(今後数十年で)と、具体的な年数を含む範囲の広い言い方に置き換えられています。 The two subspecies of West Indian manatee
2-2 players complained ... In response, MLB decided to tweak the dimensions → MLB considered it necessary to amend the size ... when criticisms were received(Q28)
During the first robo-umpire season, players complained about some strange calls. In response, MLB decided to tweak the dimensions of the zone ...
設問文 Q28(Yes・No・Not Given)
MLB considered it necessary to amend the size of the strike zone when criticisms were received from players.
In response(それを受けて)は when(〜したときに)に変わっています。
tweak(微調整する)は amend(修正する)に、the dimensions(寸法)は the size(大きさ)になっています。
2-3 less annual income and less employment stability → salaries are lower / don't keep their jobs for as long(Q23・Q24)
本文 Passage 2
... participants who said they regularly procrastinated had less annual income and less employment stability.
設問文 Q23・Q24(選択肢を2つ選ぶ問題)
Which TWO comparisons between employees who often procrastinate and those who do not are mentioned in the text?
Their salaries are lower./They don't keep their jobs for as long.
They don't keep their jobs for as long(仕事を長く続けない)という2つの文にしています。
3-1 coastal mangroves and coral reefs, rivers, lakes and inland lagoons → a variety of different aquatic habitats(Q7)
It moves between fresh water and salt water, taking advantage of coastal mangroves and coral reefs, rivers, lakes and inland lagoons.
West Indian manatees can be found in a variety of different aquatic habitats.
moves between fresh water and salt water(淡水と海水のあいだを行き来する)も、a variety of の中身に含まれています。
3-2 Research involving brain imaging → neurological evidence(Q16)
本文 Passage 2
Research involving brain imaging has found that areas of the brain linked to detection of threats and emotion regulation are actually different in people who chronically procrastinate ...
設問文 Q16(情報がどの段落にあるかを答える問題)
neurological evidence of a link between procrastination and emotion
areas of the brain ... are actually different in people who chronically procrastinate(先延ばしをよくする人では脳の領域が違う)は、設問では a link between procrastination and emotion(先延ばしと感情の関係)と、名詞の組にまとめられています。
3-3 no heckling and no shouted disagreement. Nobody said a word. → total silence(Q37)
During that first game, when DeJesus announced calls, there was no heckling and no shouted disagreement. Nobody said a word.
設問文 Q37(語群から選ぶ要約問題)
One difference, however, is that during the first game DeJesus used ABS, strike calls were met with ___.
no heckling(やじがない)、no shouted disagreement(怒鳴って反対することがない)、Nobody said a word(誰もひと言も言わなかった)という3つの否定の文が、語群では total silence(まったくの沈黙)の2語に変わっています。
本文の when DeJesus announced calls(DeJesus が判定を告げたとき)は、設問では strike calls were met with(判定が〜で迎えられた)と、判定を主語にした受け身になっています。
4-1 we're not the first person to procrastinate, nor the last → the realisation that others also procrastinate(Q15)
本文 Passage 2
We should remind ourselves that we're not the first person to procrastinate, nor the last.
設問文 Q15(情報がどの段落にあるかを答える問題)
reference to the realisation that others also procrastinate
not the first person ..., nor the last(最初の人でも最後の人でもない)は、自分のほかにも先延ばしをする人がいる、という意味です。設問はこの否定の文を、others also procrastinate(ほかの人も先延ばしをする)と肯定の形で書いています。
remind ourselves(自分に言い聞かせる)は、設問では the realisation(気づくこと)という名詞になっています。nor the last の nor は「〜もまた…
4-2 unforgiving and pedantic / There was a dialogue → may reduce some of the appeal of the game(Q38)
... he said that ABS works as designed, but that it was also unforgiving and pedantic, almost legalistic.
"There was a dialogue between pitcher and umpire."
設問文 Q38(選択問題)
What does the writer suggest about ABS in the fifth paragraph?
It may reduce some of the appeal of the game.
unforgiving(容赦のない)と pedantic(細かすぎる)は、どちらもABSに対する否定的な評価です。 There was a dialogue between pitcher and umpire(投手と審判のあいだにやりとりがあった)は、人間の審判のころにはあったものがいまは失われている、という含みがあります。選択肢はこれらを、the appeal of the game(試合の魅力)が reduce(減る)とまとめています。
4-3 executives are terrified of losing younger fans → an attempt to ensure baseball retained a young audience(Q39)
... ABS was part of a larger project to make baseball more exciting since executives are terrified of losing younger fans ...
設問文 Q39(選択問題)
Morgan Sword says that the introduction of ABS
選択肢の1つ:was an attempt to ensure baseball retained a young audience.
part of a larger project(より大きな計画の一部)は an attempt(試み)になっています。
5-1 from Mauritania down to Angola
The African manatee ... found in the sea along the west coast of Africa, from Mauritania down to Angola.
The species also makes use of rivers, with the mammals seen in landlocked countries such as Mali and Niger.
The African manatee's range is limited to coastal waters between the West African countries of Mauritania and Angola.
✗
from Mauritania down to Angola=between Mauritania and Angola
○
The species also makes use of rivers
本文の the sea along the west coast of Africa(アフリカ西海岸沿いの海)は設問の coastal waters に、from Mauritania down to Angola は between ...
A review of almost 1,800 cases of entanglement in fishing nets and of plastic consumption among marine mammals in US waters from 2009 to 2020 found that at least 700 cases involved manatees.
The risk to manatees from entanglement and plastic consumption increased significantly in the period 2009-2020.
✗
entanglement in fishing nets(漁網への絡まり)と plastic consumption(プラスチックの摂取)は、設問にもほぼ同じ形で出てきます。
Instead of making any judgments himself about a strike, DeJesus had decisions fed to him through an earpiece ...
設問文 Q27(Yes・No・Not Given)
When DeJesus first used ABS, he shared decision-making about strikes with it.
✗
decisions は設問の decision-making に、about a strike は about strikes に対応しています。
Instead of making any judgments himself(自分では何の判断もせずに)です。
Test 2 では、本文の countless arguments が語群では numerous disputes に、no heckling や Nobody said a word が total silence になっていました。
Test 2 の Q23・Q24 では、本文の less annual income and less employment stability が、選択肢では Their salaries are lower と They don't keep their jobs for as long
Test 2 の Q15 では、we're not the first person to procrastinate, nor the last という文が、設問では others also procrastinate になっていました。
ABS was part of a larger project ... since executives are terrified of losing younger fans の since が理由を表していて、選択肢の an attempt to ensure baseball retained a young audience と対応していました。
Instead of making any judgments himself
