Cambridge IELTS 21 Test 2
本文の a series of droughts が、設問では a climatic factor になっています。
1-1 brain regions involved in processing → parts of the brain that deal with(Q2)
... REM sleep activity was high in brain regions involved in processing ...
pigeons displayed activity in parts of the brain that deal with ___ input
brain regions(脳の領域)が parts of the brain に、involved in processing(処理に関わる)が that deal with(扱う)に置き換えられています。
1-2 merchants travelling from India by sea → people who brought goods by ship(Q17)
本文 Passage 2
... traded with merchants travelling from India by sea.
設問文 Q17(情報がどの段落にあるかを答える問題)
a reference to people who brought goods by ship
by sea(海路で)が by ship(船で)に変わっています。
1-3 special permissions → approval(Q32)
... data is spread across different government departments that each require special permissions to be accessed.
設問文 Q32(語群から選ぶ要約問題)
... each person involved needs ___ to access the relevant data, which is often spread across different departments.
special permissions(特別な許可)が、語群では approval(承認)の1語になっています。
2-1 when events are replayed in dreams → dreaming about past experiences(Q6)
... when events are replayed in dreams, this helps to integrate memories into longer-term storage.
Dreaming about past experiences helps us to create lasting memories of them.
events(出来事)は past experiences(過去の経験)に、replayed(再生される)は dreaming about と言い換えられています。
integrate memories into longer-term storage(記憶を長期の保存に組み込む)が、create lasting memories(長く残る記憶をつくる)になっています。
2-2 fail to realise the complexity → be unaware of the challenges(Q29)
... they fail to realise the complexity around deploying advanced machine learning systems in the real world.
設問文 Q29(選択問題)
In the fourth paragraph, the writer suggests that many politicians may
選択肢の1つ:be unaware of the challenges of implementing national AI initiatives.
fail to realise(気づかない)が be unaware of(知らない)に、complexity(複雑さ)が challenges(困難)に、deploying(配備する、実際に運用する)が implementing(実行する)に置き換えられています。
2-3 have a discussion about ... the distrust → explore people's concerns(Q39)
... we need to have a discussion about AI ethics and the distrust that many people have towards machine learning.
設問文 Q39(Yes・No・Not Given)
In order to benefit from AI and minimise the harms, we have to explore people's concerns about its use.
need to が have to に、have a discussion about(〜について話し合う)が explore(検討する)に変わっています。the distrust that many people have towards machine learning(多くの人が機械学習に対して抱いている不信感)は、関係詞節を使った長い名詞句でした。
In order to benefit from AI and minimise the harms If we are to reap the benefits and minimise the potential harms of AI reap the benefits(利益を得る)が benefit from に、If we are to(〜しようとするなら)が In order to(〜するために)に書き換えられています。
... a situation that may have been brought to a crisis point by a series of droughts.
設問文 Q15(情報がどの段落にあるかを答える問題)
the likelihood that a climatic factor increased the problems Mapungubwe faced
brought to a crisis point(危機的な状況にまで追い込んだ)が increased the problems(問題を大きくした)に、may have been(〜だったかもしれない)が the likelihood that(〜の可能性)になっています。
3-2 cattle herding and other types of farming / traded → agricultural produce / exchanged(Q19)
本文 Passage 2
... cattle herding and other types of farming brought plenty of food and a surplus that could be traded for needed goods.
設問文 Q19(情報がどの段落にあるかを答える問題)
a mention of agricultural produce being exchanged for other items
cattle herding(牛の放牧)と other types of farming(その他の農業)がまとめて agricultural(農業の)の1語になり、そこから生まれた food と a surplus(余剰分)が produce(農産物)になっています。traded for は exchanged for に、needed goods(必要な品物)は other items(ほかの品物)と言い換えられています。
3-3 brain imaging is needed → more research should be carried out(Q10)
He argues that as well as outward behaviour, brain imaging is needed to show that the octopuses are replaying sequences of activities ...
Scheel believes more research into octopuses' dreams should be carried out.
設問の more research(さらなる研究)は、本文の brain imaging(脳の画像検査)という具体的な方法を含む、範囲の広い語です。is needed(必要だ)は should be carried out(行われるべきだ)に、argues は believes に置き換えられています。
4-1 their precise function is not known → the uncertainty regarding the purpose(Q14)
本文 Passage 2
... but their precise function is not known.
設問文 Q14(情報がどの段落にあるかを答える問題)
a mention of the uncertainty regarding the purpose of certain objects
is not known(知られていない)という否定の文を、設問は the uncertainty(不確かさ)という名詞で表しています。function(機能、役割)は purpose(目的)に、their が指している figures(人の形をした小さな像)は certain objects(ある種の物)に変わっています。
4-2 jeopardises the value → points out a risk(Q28)
... this mindset actually jeopardises the value of machine intelligence by disregarding important AI safety principles ...
設問文 Q28(選択問題)
When discussing AI solutionism in the second paragraph, the writer
選択肢の1つ:points out a risk involved.
AI solutionism(AIですべてを解決できるという考え方)が機械知能の価値を危うくしている、と筆者が述べている部分を、選択肢は points out a risk(危険を指摘する)と筆者の動作で表しています。
4-3 there is no AI solution for everything → Why AI may not be the answer(Q40)
These examples demonstrate that there is no AI solution for everything.
設問文 Q40(選択問題)
What would be a suitable subtitle for Reading Passage 3?
Why AI may not be the answer to our problems
AI may not be the answer to our problems(AIが私たちの問題の答えになるとは限らない)は、本文の no AI solution for everything(すべてに効くAIの解決策はない)の言い換えです。solution が answer に、for everything が to our problems に変わり、no を使った強い否定は may not というやわらかい言い方になっています。
Heidi)... as though she was pursuing a crab.
Costello)... as though he were being attacked by a predator.
While it was asleep, the octopus called Costello reacted as if it was hunting.
✗
○
Costello の段落にあるのは being attacked by a predator狩りの言い換えがあるのは、Heidi という別の個体の段落
pursuing a crab(カニを追いかける)は、設問の hunting(狩りをする)の言い換えとして自然に読めます。
5-2 That goes for 〜 を読み飛ばす(Q11)
The trouble is that we will never be able to experience any animal's dreams. That goes for other humans' dreams too.
We may soon be able to share the dreams of other human beings.
✗
never be able to
○
That goes for 〜 too=同じことが〜にも当てはまるnever be able to experience が、他の人間の夢にもそのまま当てはまる
設問の soon(まもなく)と本文の never(決して〜ない)を並べれば、判定は難しくありません。
Still, AI security remains an often overlooked topic when machine learning systems are installed.
設問文 Q38(Yes・No・Not Given)
Nowadays, the need to protect AI systems is always taken into account when they are set up.
overlooked=見落とされている、軽視されているan often overlooked topic は「しばしば見落とされる話題」
The hotel overlooks the sea.
設問の the need to protect AI systems は AI security の、set up は installed の言い換えなので、判定では always taken into account と often overlooked を比べることになります。
Test 2 では、本文の a series of droughts が設問では a climatic factor に、their precise function is not known が the uncertainty になっていました。
Test 2 の Q29 では、the machine-learning sector や the race to dominate のように本文の語をそのまま使った選択肢も並んでいました。
